Understanding SARMs and Their Therapeutic Potential

 

SARMs are also known as selective androgen receptor modulators. Depending on their molecular structure, these drug-like compounds with low molecular weight can act as either androgen receptor suppressors or activators. The thing about androgen receptors and their regulating proteins is that they have different effects on the different tissues of the body that they target. This is one of the reasons why SARMs are capable of eliciting selective anabolic advantages in the body. SARMs are essentially drug-like small molecules that have been biochemically designed to provide different levels of suppressive and activating effects on the androgen receptor or AR. The effects that you want to happen will have to depend on the tissues of the body that you are targeting. Similar to natural androgens, SARMs are very much capable of easily penetrating cellular membranes. They then easily and securely attach themselves to the androgen receptor. After attaching themselves, the SARM-AR complex forms and then travels to the cell’s nucleus. It turns into a gene regulator that then recruits other gene cofactors. All these actions lead to SARMs altering the response of the cell on a genetic level.
